In 1998, M.C.Roy, today the Project Head of SRVC, visited School for the Blind in Keezhmadu. He met Jacob Peter, who was the Administrator of the School. They used to interact on the potential for the Visually Challenged youth to be put into productive use. Thus, Musical Instruments were purchased for the School and a Band Troupe was formed, which was an eye opener. The kids simply excelled in their performance. For the formal Inauguration of the Band, a paper was presented by M.C.Roy on opportunities available and avenues that could be explored for the Visually Challenged. The further interaction between a few like minded people culminated in registration of an NGO in November 2002 which was named “SOCIETY FOR REHABILITATION OF THE VISUALLY CHALLENGED”. Jacob Peter who was the Secretary of SRVC organized a state level meet of the visually challenged community to discuss commercial ventures by forming self help groups. M.C.Roy who was the keynote speaker strongly appealed to migrate from conventional job spheres where they could be rendered less productive in this highly competitive age and to take advantage of technology to be on a level playing ground with others. He suggested new areas where the Visually Challenged could compete equally with their sighted counterparts and excel in job such as Call Center jobs, Tele Marketing, Medical Transcription, Physiotherapy, etc.
Identifying the need to prepare the visually challenged youth towards such job spheres, SRVC decided to conduct awareness drives & short term training programmes for them in Information Technology, Personality Development, Communicative English, Leadership Skills etc. The first major initiative was a 2-week intensive residential summer training programme held in April 2003 to give an orientation in the above areas to over 25 educated youth from various parts of the State, which was a major success. Mr. Sunil J.Mathew, a young I.T. professional who volunteered to offer support thus joined the team as Project Co-ordinator who proved to be the perfect combination for the Project Head. He is currently the Secretary of SRVC. The NGO activities are led from the front by the duo.
The orientation programmes and social integration exercises held in the past have had the involment and participation of eminent personalities like Hon.Ministers Sri Dominic Presentation and Prof.K.V.Thomas, Hon.Justices Shri BenjaminKoshy, Sri.P.K.Shamsudeen & Dr.Narayana Kurup, His Grace Cardinal Mar.
